Imagine watching a golden butterfly spread its wings for the first time; turning ordinary branches into a garden arbor; writing a report on paper you’ve made yourself; discovering ways to turn storm runoff into a fertile growing area. At West Michigan Academy, students daily apply classroom lessons to broader, real-life areas.
At West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science, learning takes an active roll. We consider active participation in the learning process to be paramount to success in school and through life. With our challenging accelerated program, the focus is on the intellectual development of each student.
- Extensive, all-encompassing environmental science program
Every student participates in weekly environmental science class that takes them outside, in the labs, and experiencing what they learn.
- Differentiated Learning
This process recognizes each student’s abilities and teaches to the individual in regard to how a student learns and the amount of time each student needs to master the topic.
- Hands-On Curriculum
Outdoor classrooms, active gardens, animal studies, on-going classroom projects, Service Learning, and an in-depth science fair program are just a few of the ways students apply their studies to real-life experiences.
- Accelerated Program
Students are encouraged to work to their highest potential and are provided with the resources and opportunities to advance quickly.
- Strong Character Education Program
Every month, students discuss specific positive character traits. In Pre-K through fifth grade, a student is selected from each class and awarded with the Power of One honor for best modeling that month’s character education theme.
