This is a school that helps a child learn different kinds of science. We get the privilege of experiencing 62 beautiful acres of land. I have been here for 11 years and every year I learn something new.

Winter Programs

West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science will be offering several programs throughout the winter. Depending on the weather and amount of snow, we will be offering all hikes with snowshoes. All children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. For all events, please meet at WMAES Playground, 4463 Leonard Street, NW Grand Rapids (except Film Festival). Please take a look at the programs listed below and join us!

***All WMAES families may attend winter programs for free.***

Full Moon/Owl Prowl Hike
Date: Thurs, Dec 8
Time: 6:00pm – 7:30pm
Registration due: Dec 5
Cost: $3 with your own snowshoes or $5 to rent snowshoes

Explore the ecosystems in winter by the light of the moon. Play some moonlight tag and hopefully talk to some owls along the way! We’ll have a roaring campfire in the woods to warm up by and have some hot cocoa.

Snowshoe Adventures
Date:Thurs, Jan 19
Time: 6:00pm – 7:30pm
Registration due: Jan 16
Cost: $3 with your own snowshoes or $5 to rent snowshoes

Learn the basics of snowshoeing while exploring 63 acres of trails at WMAES and end up at a roaring fire in the woods for some hot cocoa. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult and appropriate clothing must be worn.

Backcountry Film Festival
Date: Thurs, Feb 16
Time: 5:45pm – 8:00pm
Registration due: Feb 13
Cost: $10 for adults and $5 for children 5-15 years old (children under 5 are free)

This film festival promotes the work of grassroots filmmakers who tell compelling and entertaining stories of backcountry, non motorized sports and environmental preservation. All proceeds go to 6th grade camp fund! Please meet in the WMAES Gymnasium.  Check out the website or download our flier for more info!

Makin’ Maple Syrup
Date: Thurs, Mar 22
Time: 6:00pm – 7:30pm
Registration due: Mar 19
Cost: $3 with your own snowshoes or $5 to rent snowshoes

Come on out to WMAES and help us with our syrup collecting and learn how syrup has been made throughout history. If weather permits we will snowshoe out to the maple forest.
